Project Overview

A client contacted DECIBEL with the need to improve the acoustics of an office space located within a large logistical base. The space was a wide open-plan room with very high ceilings, which made it highly reverberant and uncomfortable for employees working inside.

DECIBEL was tasked with creating an acoustic treatment plan that would reduce echo and improve speech clarity, while also allowing flexibility for future design updates during ongoing renovations.

Acoustic Treatment for Large Open-Plan Office Spaces

Open-plan offices with high ceilings often suffer from long reverberation times. This can make conversations tiring, reduce focus, and increase stress for staff. Effective acoustic treatment ensures a comfortable and productive workplace by controlling reflections and lowering noise levels across the space.

Challenge

The office’s size and high ceilings created a strong reverberant environment, with sound constantly reflecting across the room. The solution needed to be installed without disrupting daily work and had to allow for future expansions once the remodeling and interior design were finalised.

Scope of Work

  • Site visit and acoustic assessment by a DECIBEL engineer
  • Design of an acoustic project using Fomex Pyramid panels for the ceiling and GLL panels for the walls
  • Installation of ceiling panels as the first stage of the project
  • Planning for wall panel installation in a future stage, once the design and colors are finalised

Solution

DECIBEL installed Fomex Pyramid panels across the ceiling of the office space. These panels were chosen for their strong sound absorption properties and efficiency in reducing echo in large rooms with high ceilings. The plan also included GLL panels for the walls to further improve acoustics, but their installation was postponed until the remodeling process is complete. This staged approach gave the client immediate acoustic improvement while leaving flexibility for future design decisions.

Result

The installation of the ceiling panels successfully reduced reverberation, improving speech clarity and overall comfort for the employees working in the space. The client expressed satisfaction with the first stage of the project and has confirmed their intention to continue with wall treatments as part of the next phase.
