Project Overview

As open-space office layouts become increasingly popular for their flexibility and collaborative potential, the downside is becoming equally apparent: elevated noise levels, reduced focus, and rising stress. One such company turned to DECIBEL to bring balance back to their environment by introducing custom acoustic desk separators—designed not only to reduce noise but to align with the visual identity of the space.

Challenge

In a shared workspace where multiple employees are working in close proximity, random background noise can quickly accumulate into a constant distraction. The result: diminished concentration, higher stress levels, and a measurable dip in productivity—studies suggest up to 60%. Atendia needed a way to introduce personal acoustic space within the openness of the office, without compromising on aesthetics or layout.

Scope of Work

DECIBEL carried out full measurements of the workspace and designed bespoke acoustic desk separators for each workstation. The team was responsible for the design, customisation, production, and delivery of the solution—tailored to meet both functional and visual requirements specified by the client.

Solution

Each separator was precision-made to fit the individual workstation layout. The acoustic panels were designed to create an “acoustic shadow” around each employee, absorbing and diffusing noise to reduce distraction. Depending on positioning, the separators provided a reduction in noise levels between 3 and 9 decibels—a meaningful improvement in everyday comfort. A palette of 22 textile colours allowed the solution to be customised, blending seamlessly into the existing office design.

Result

The installation of the separators helped restore clarity and calm to the office environment. Employees reported reduced distractions, improved concentration, and a more comfortable atmosphere for individual work. Visually, the acoustic panels complemented the office’s design language, offering function without visual compromise.

Flexible but noisy - there is a solution

In the modern workplace, flexibility often comes at the cost of focus. As more businesses adopt open-plan layouts, acoustic privacy is becoming a critical component of employee wellbeing and productivity. DECIBEL’s custom acoustic desk separators offer a practical, elegant solution—blending science-backed sound control with design versatility that respects the uniqueness of each space.
