Complete Soundproofing for a Bucharest Apartment

Project Overview
DECIBEL was contacted by a private client in Bucharest, Romania, to solve a serious noise issue in a residential apartment. The noise came from the upstairs neighbours and included loud voices, slamming doors, and objects hitting the floor. The client wanted to soundproof the bedroom and later added a second room used as a home office.
To achieve the required level of sound insulation, DECIBEL designed and installed a full custom system for both rooms. The project used several of DECIBEL’s advanced products for wall and ceiling soundproofing, as well as special soundproofing membranes and mounting technologies.
Why Acoustic Treatment Matters
In apartment buildings, noise from neighbours is a very common issue. One of the most difficult types of noise to isolate is impact noise. This is the sound of footsteps, dropped objects, or slammed doors. Unlike airborne noise, such as speech or music, impact noise travels through the building structure and affects both ceilings and walls.
Excessive noise at home can lead to stress, poor sleep, and even force people to consider moving out of their homes. Proper sound insulation creates a calm and healthy living environment. In this case, the client needed a complete solution to restore comfort and privacy.
Challenge
The client reported constant disturbance from the apartment above. The noise included loud shouting, slamming doors, and regular impact sounds. It was present day and night, and had become unbearable. Typical soundproofing solutions were not enough for this level of noise. The only way to reduce both airborne and structural vibrations was to create a full “room-in-room” system.
This approach required insulation on all surfaces. Such as walls, ceiling, and floor, without affecting the usable space more than necessary. The system also had to deliver high sound reduction levels while preserving the function and comfort of the rooms.
Scope of Work
- Acoustic assessment of the apartment
- Design of a full surface soundproofing system
- Installation of the following products:
- BLOCK SYSTEM™ for wall sound insulation
- MUTE SYSTEM™ 33 with DClox™ anti-vibration mount
- C-BLOCK SYSTEM™ for ceiling insulation
- DCvisco™ soundproof membrane for added density
- Complete installation of soundproofing doors
- Execution in both the bedroom and home office
Solution
DECIBEL engineered and installed a custom room-in-room system. The walls were treated with BLOCK SYSTEM™ and MUTE SYSTEM™ 33, which uses the patented DClox™ mount to block vibration transfer. The ceiling was insulated with C-BLOCK SYSTEM™, a thick and efficient ceiling system designed for impact noise. To improve the density and performance of the whole structure, DCvisco™ membranes were added in key areas.
This multi-layer setup significantly reduced both airborne and impact noise. All materials were professionally installed to ensure long-term durability and performance. The solution was applied to two rooms: a bedroom and a home office.
Result
After the installation, the client reported a major improvement in comfort and peace. The noise from the upstairs apartment was no longer heard in either room. The bedroom became a quiet place for rest, and the office became suitable for focused work.
Although the project cost was higher than typical solutions, the client found the result so effective that he immediately requested a second room to be treated the same way. DECIBEL managed the project from design to full installation, delivering a complete high-performance solution.
