Project Overview

David Gresham Records is one of South Africa’s most respected independent record companies. With a history spanning over four decades, the label has worked with international and local artists such as Nickelback, Kylie Minogue, and Janet Jackson.

To continue meeting the highest production standards, the studio’s management contacted DECIBEL to improve the acoustic environment of two editing suites and a vocal recording area. The goal was to upgrade the acoustic quality and interior design without interrupting daily studio operations.

Creating a Precise and Balanced Studio Soundscape

In professional studios, sound accuracy is essential. The existing acoustic conditions at David Gresham Records needed to be refined to ensure full-frequency clarity, eliminate room modes, and provide a controlled reverberation environment.

Challenge

Scope of Work

• On-site inspection and acoustic simulations of the studio spaces

Solution

DECIBEL developed a tailored acoustic upgrade that treated all major surfaces of the rooms, walls, ceilings, and floors. The ceiling was replaced with high-performance acoustic ceiling panels, improving vertical sound control. The walls were fitted with a mix of textile-covered and wooden perforated panels, ensuring strong mid-to-high frequency absorption.

Acoustic curtains were installed to add flexibility and reduce unwanted reflections during sessions. The floors were finished with laminated wood, selected for its balance of aesthetic quality and acoustic support. In the vocal booth, a double-door system with integrated soundproofing membranes was installed to ensure full isolation during recording.

Result

The completed project delivered a noticeable improvement in sound clarity and room balance across all treated areas. Room modes were eliminated, and reverberation curves were smoothed out, creating a precise and clean listening environment.
