Project Overview

DECIBEL was selected to design and install a sound-insulating barrier for a BILLA supermarket located in Varna, Bulgaria. The project aimed to reduce the noise coming from the store’s chillers, which were installed in the outdoor area next to the building.

The chillers were positioned near a neighbouring kindergarten, and the noise they produced was causing concern. The solution had to protect the children and staff from constant mechanical sounds and also act as a physical divider between the shop and the kindergarten.

Reducing Chiller Noise to Protect a Nearby Kindergarten

In various sectors, commercial equipment like chillers can produce continuous noise that spreads into nearby properties. When such equipment is placed near a school or kindergarten, the sound can affect concentration, sleep, and overall well-being, especially for young children.

In this case, BILLA needed a sound insulation system that would reduce noise impact and serve as a barrier between two different properties.

Challenge

The challenge was to build a barrier that could block mechanical noise from the chillers while also fitting into the limited space between the shop and the kindergarten. The structure had to be strong, effective, and long-lasting, with materials suited for outdoor use.

Scope of Work

  • On-site inspection and noise assessment
  • Design of an external sound-insulating barrier
  • Selection of weather-resistant materials
  • Construction and installation of the system
  • Integration of the barrier to also serve as a fence

Solution

DECIBEL designed and built a sound-insulating barrier positioned between the chillers and the kindergarten. The barrier was made from sound-absorbing and sound-blocking materials, carefully selected for their durability in outdoor conditions.

The barrier had two functions. First, it reduced the noise generated by the chillers to protect the surrounding area. Second, it served as a fence between the supermarket and the kindergarten, making sure of the privacy and safety for both sides.

Result

After the barrier was installed, noise levels near the kindergarten were significantly reduced. The harmful sound from the chillers was blocked, and the outdoor environment became quieter and more suitable for children.

The project was completed successfully and met the requirements of both the supermarket and the neighbouring property.
