Project Overview

Plasser & Theurer is the only worldwide full-service provider for the construction and maintenance of railway tracks. Originally focused on track construction, maintenance, and measurement, the company expanded in the 1980s to include equipment for overhead line construction and maintenance.

Today, while retaining its core competencies, Plasser & Theurer continues to innovate in order to improve efficiency, productivity, and the working environment for staff.

After successfully collaborating with DECIBEL in 2022 to build a soundproofing enclosure at Plant P09, the company returned in 2023 with a new request. This time, the task was to enclose two thamping machines that generated 109 dB during operation.

Challenge

The main challenge was to design a soundproofing enclosure that reduced noise to acceptable levels without interfering with daily work processes.

The solution needed to provide both high acoustic performance and seamless integration with operational requirements, ensuring safety, accessibility, and functionality.

Scope of Work

  • On-site acoustic assessment and noise measurement
  • Design of a custom enclosure for two thamping machines
  • Integration of metal perforated PZP panels, louvres, and doors
  • Development of an automatically opening 2-part sliding door for operational access
  • Installation of a standard soundproofing door and vision windows
  • Incorporation of ventilation and an attenuator for airflow and temperature control
  • Prefabrication, delivery, and one-week on-site installation

Solution

DECIBEL designed and installed a soundproofing enclosure using metal perforated PZP panels, complemented by louvres and doors.

A two-part sliding automatic door ensured that work processes could continue without disruption, while a standard acoustic door and vision windows provided easy access and safe monitoring of the machines.

To maintain a comfortable working temperature and airflow inside the enclosure, ventilation and an attenuator were seamlessly integrated into the design.

Result

The installation was completed within one week, minimising disruption to Plasser & Theurer’s operations. The final solution delivered significant noise reduction while maintaining full functionality and accessibility of the thamping machines.

The customer was once again impressed by the speed of the installation, the engineering quality, and the overall soundproofing performance.
