Project Overview

DECIBEL carried out a soundproofing project at Kindergarten 67 "Winnie the Pooh" in Sofia, Bulgaria. We reduced the noise impact of an external air conditioning unit. The goal was to improve the acoustic comfort for children and staff by addressing the disruptive low-frequency sound produced by the HVAC system.

Challenge

Low-frequency noise generated by air conditioning units and external ventilation systems can be persistent and intrusive, especially in sensitive environments like kindergartens. The challenge was to reduce the noise impact without interfering with the equipment's operation or airflow.

Scope of Work

DECIBEL was responsible for designing and installing a sound-insulating barrier specifically tailored to the noise source and surrounding environment. The barrier was engineered to block and absorb sound effectively, considering both the characteristics of the AC unit and the proximity to nearby occupied areas.

Solution

A sound-insulating barrier was constructed around the air conditioning unit. Designed to target low-frequency noise, the barrier was customised in terms of material and dimensions to suit the specific installation. The system not only blocks direct noise transmission but also reduces acoustic reflections, significantly improving the nearby sound environment.

Result

Following the installation, noise levels were reduced to a more acceptable threshold, contributing to a calmer, healthier setting for children and staff. The soundproofing barrier helped eliminate the constant low-frequency hum that can cause discomfort, disrupted rest, or difficulty concentrating, especially in environments intended for rest and learning.

HVACs Are Cool, But Noisy

Outdoor HVAC systems are a frequent but overlooked source of noise pollution, particularly in educational and residential settings. DECIBEL’s solution at Kindergarten 67 demonstrates how properly engineered sound-insulating barriers can offer effective noise reduction without compromising ventilation performance.
