Acoustic treatment at City Stage Sofia

Project Overview
City Stage is one of the few venues in Sofia that regularly hosts live music events, parties, dance festivals, and movie screenings. As a multifunctional club space, it requires a high-quality acoustic environment to ensure a pleasant experience for performers and audiences alike.
During a performance, a well-known Bulgarian artist noticed an acoustic issue near the stage, specifically a sound defect in the 80 Hz frequency range. Following this observation, the team at City Stage contacted DECIBEL to identify and resolve the problem.
Improving Low-Frequency Acoustics
Low-frequency sound issues are common in performance spaces, especially around the stage area where bass buildup can occur. In this case, the club’s goal was to eliminate the unwanted resonance in the space without affecting the overall sound balance or the visual style of the venue.
The first step was a full inspection and acoustic measurement performed by a DECIBEL engineer.
Challenge
The main challenge was identifying the source of the problem within a frequency range that often goes unnoticed but heavily affects audio quality. The issue was localised in a narrow band around 80 Hz, which required precise tuning to reduce the resonance without over-absorbing other frequencies. The solution also needed to match the visual identity of the venue and be completed without interrupting club operations.
Scope of Work
- On-site inspection and acoustic measurements
- Diagnosis of low-frequency resonance near the stage
- Selection and installation of appropriate acoustic panels
- Final sound level testing to confirm the effect of the treatment
Solution
Based on the acoustic analysis, DECIBEL recommended the use of perforated acoustic panels, which are effective at absorbing targeted low-frequency bands. The client selected the WavO model, a designer panel that delivers both sound absorption and an appealing visual finish.
The panels were installed in critical areas around the stage to control resonance and improve overall sound clarity during performances.
Result
After the installation, final measurements confirmed that the sound levels matched the target values defined at the beginning of the project. The problematic frequency response around 80 Hz was successfully reduced.
The client shared positive feedback, noting the improved audio quality and smooth integration of the acoustic panels with the venue’s interior.
