Acoustic improvement for training centre in Brussels

Project Overview
DECIBEL completed an acoustic treatment project for Koekeltech, an educational association based in Brussels, Belgium. Koekeltech offers a variety of training courses in software, graphic design, and web development.
The goal of the project was to improve the acoustic environment in the main classroom, where strong echo and resonances were affecting speech clarity and overall focus during lessons.
Improving Learning Conditions Through Better Classroom Acoustics
Good acoustics are essential in educational settings. When sound reflects off hard surfaces, it creates an echo and makes it difficult for students to understand their teachers. At Koekeltech, this problem had become a serious barrier to concentration and learning.
The client contacted DECIBEL with the aim of creating a more comfortable and focused learning environment that would support clear communication and increase motivation for both students and instructors.
Challenge
The main classroom had poor acoustic conditions, with critical resonance levels that reduced speech intelligibility. This made it harder for students to stay focused and for teachers to speak effectively. The treatment needed to significantly reduce reverberation while also fitting the classroom layout and visual design.
Scope of Work
- On-site assessment of the classroom’s acoustic properties
- Design of a custom acoustic treatment solution
- Production of textile-covered acoustic panels tailored to the space
- Installation with a 50 mm offset from the wall to improve sound absorption performance
Solution
DECIBEL, in partnership with its local distributor in Belgium, delivered and installed twelve custom-made acoustic panels. These panels were covered in textile fabric and designed to match the classroom interior.
To increase their effectiveness, the panels were mounted 50 mm away from the walls, creating an air gap that improves sound absorption, especially in low and mid frequencies.
The system was tailored to meet the client’s exact needs, both technically and visually.
Result
After the installation, the reverberation time in the classroom was significantly reduced. Echo was no longer a problem, and the acoustic comfort in the space improved immediately. Both students and teachers noticed better speech clarity and improved focus during training sessions.
The client confirmed that the new setup met all expectations. The classroom is now ready to welcome new students in a setting that supports clear communication and productive learning.
