Project Overview

DECIBEL was contacted by a client from Hotel Bulgarska Morava in Sofia with a request to reduce sound transfer through a dividing wall between two guest rooms. The client had recently completed a full remodeling and did not want to install a full soundproofing system, so they asked for a lighter solution that could be applied directly onto the existing wall.

DECIBEL explained that acoustic panels are not designed for full soundproofing, but can improve room acoustics and reduce sound transmission to a limited degree. The project was therefore approached as a partial solution to improve both acoustic comfort and sound control.

Acoustic Comfort in Hotel Rooms

In hospitality environments, noise between guest rooms can affect the quality of stay and reduce customer satisfaction. While full soundproofing systems are the most effective solution, lighter acoustic treatments can still provide noticeable improvements when a major renovation is not possible. This project aimed to improve the acoustic comfort of the rooms within the limits of surface-mounted acoustic panels.

Challenge

The main challenge was the restriction of not being able to install a full soundproofing system, as the hotel had just been remodeled. The solution had to use surface-mounted acoustic panels only, which are typically designed to reduce reverberation rather than block sound transfer.

Scope of Work

  • Consultation with the client to explain the limitations of surface treatments
  • Creation of a 3D model in collaboration with the hotel’s architect
  • Design of an acoustic treatment using Echo Wall panels in two thicknesses
  • On-site installation of the Echo Wall square panels on the dividing wall

Solution

DECIBEL installed Echo Wall acoustic panels in two different thicknesses, arranged across the dividing wall to absorb sound and improve the acoustic properties of the room. While these panels are primarily designed to reduce echo and improve clarity, in this case, they also provided a small improvement in sound insulation. The use of varied thicknesses enhanced the absorption range and contributed to a better overall acoustic environment.

Result

The installed Echo Wall panels improved the acoustic comfort of the room and achieved approximately 5 dB of sound reduction, which is the maximum possible with this type of treatment. Although not a full soundproofing solution, the client was satisfied with the partial improvement, and guests benefited from a quieter and more pleasant environment.
