Custom acoustic treatment of an open-plan IT office

Project Overview
In a shared office building housing multiple IT companies, employees were struggling to find moments of quiet. The open-plan design amplified noise and offered little privacy, leaving staff with no dedicated space for focused conversations or private calls. DECIBEL was brought in to craft an acoustic intervention that would not only resolve the sound issues but also enhance the workspace both functionally and aesthetically.
Challenge
The core challenge was to introduce acoustic privacy in a high-traffic, open-plan office environment—without compromising the flow of the space or its visual identity. Employees needed a destination within the office where they could retreat for quick conversations, calls, or focused work—without the need for closed-off meeting rooms or structural alterations.
Scope of Work
DECIBEL developed a bespoke solution that would integrate naturally into the existing layout. The project involved acoustic consultation, design of custom-built elements, and full installation. Attention was paid not only to the acoustics but also to the architectural harmony of the space.
Solution
The result was a custom-designed Acoustic Tunnel—a sculptural, walk-in structure with asymmetrical geometry that acts as both a sound refuge and a visual statement. The tunnel’s irregular dimensions help scatter sound reflections, contributing to a quieter and more comfortable micro-environment within the larger office. In addition to its primary acoustic function, the tunnel helped break up the monotony of the open space, introducing a sense of flow, separation, and visual interest.
Result
The transformation was immediate. Employees gravitated toward the Acoustic Tunnel for one-on-one conversations, calls, and spontaneous collaboration. Over time, it evolved into an informal meeting point—a semi-private hub that fostered social connection without formalising the interaction. Sound levels in the surrounding space were noticeably reduced, and the overall atmosphere became more relaxed and productive.
The Problem With Open-plan Offices
As open-plan offices continue to dominate workplace design, the need for flexible acoustic solutions is more urgent than ever. Traditional meeting rooms aren’t always the answer—teams need adaptable, intuitive spaces that support both focus and connection. DECIBEL’s Acoustic Tunnel exemplifies how acoustic architecture can transform not just how a space sounds, but how it feels and functions for the people within it.
